In the words of Visiting Scholar, Dr. Patricia Lambert Stock, the University of Maryland Writing Project is now ‘open for business.’ We are very excited to welcome you to our new website!
Patti is a Professor Emeriti from Michigan State University (plstock@msu.edu). She and Dr. Joseph McCaleb (jlm@umd.edu) are spearheading our new National Writing Project site here at the University of Maryland College Park.
The National Writing Project believes in student and teacher writing development. Writing Project sites, like ours at the UMCP, offer teacher workshops, updates, readings, professional contacts, and advice. The Center for Literacy, Language, and Culture (CLLC) is a new, thriving structure within the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. In a dramatic and highly useful way, CLLC supplements rather than supplants existing programs English/Language Arts, Reading, and Second Language Education and Culture.
The Center promotes academic collaboration across established "disciplinary boundaries" in ways that have recently emerged in scholarship and professional practice. CLLC focuses comprehensively and in a formalized fashion on the themes of culture, literacy, language, and schooling, especially in urban settings.
The primary goals of the Center for Literacy, Language, and Culture are shown here and are elaborated in the mission statement.
