For nearly forty years the mathematics education program at University of Maryland, College Park has been a nationally prominent center for research and development, teaching, and service addressing improvement of school and college mathematics programs. The level of activity and influence of our program in the Center for Mathematics Education has never been higher than at this critical time of reform in school mathematics. Current and recently completed projects are developing innovative approaches to curriculum, teaching, and teacher education in mathematics K-12. The instructional and service activities of faculty in the Center for Mathematics Education are translating those ideas into classroom practice through a variety of courses and graduate degree programs.

The University of Maryland’s Center for Mathematics Education is a part of the Mid-Atlantic Center for Teaching and Learning, in partnership with Pennsylvania State University and the University of Delaware, and funded by the National Science Foundation.

 :: Unit Mission     
The mission of the Center for Mathematics Education is to improve school and college mathematics education through a coordinated program of research, teaching, and service. The objectives of the Center are:

1. To conduct research that advances knowledge of how students learn and develop a deep and connected understanding of mathematics, and of how to improve mathematics teaching and learning within schools.
2. To develop and test innovative curricula and instructional programs that exemplify best current thinking on content and teaching of mathematics.
3. To develop and evaluate assessments and instructional strategies exemplifying high quality mathematics education for teaching all students.
4. To enhance the professional knowledge and skills of pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers.
5. To provide graduate education at the masters and doctoral level that integrates the domains of mathematics, student thinking, pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment in order to prepare students for careers involving research, curriculum development, teacher education, or supervision and support of mathematics instruction.
6. To collaborate with and to provide consultant services for mathematics education personnel in public and private schools in Maryland, as well as for national and international mathematics education initiatives.
