Admission Requirements
The M. Ed. program in Foreign Language Education is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in and who may or may not be certified to teach a foreign language. For candidates who desire master's level certification in Foreign Language Education but who do not have an undergraduate double major with certification (Secondary Education and one of the following foreign languages: French, German, Russian, Spanish, Latin, or Italian), please see the Maryland Master's Certification Program in Secondary Education with an emphasis on teaching French, German, Russian, Spanish, Latin, or Italian at: http://www.education.umd.edu/EDCI/info/mc-proginfo.html.
To be admitted to the M.Ed. Program in Foreign Language Education (FLE), applicants must meet the following Graduate School requirements:

A fully completed B. S. or B. A. in any relevant subject area with a Grade Point Average of 3.0 (B) or higher.

Three letters of recommendation, preferably from former professors who can assess the applicant’s academic potential. Letters must be accompanied by the recommendation form and the summary evaluation form, which are part of the application packet

A Statement of Goals, which should describe how the applicant’s academic career objectives and experiences fit with the intended program of study.

International Student Applications
There are admission requirements for TOEFL Internet-based Testing (IBT).
Each international applicant must provide an official statement regarding financial support. This statement ensures that the applicant has sufficient financial resources to meet educational and living expenses.

Degree Requirements
Candidates for the in the M. Ed. Program in Foreign Language Education must meet the following degree requirements:

Completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours of the prescribed course work at the graduate level,

Completion of one fully approved Seminar Paper written under the direction of a faculty member in the program, and
-
A passing score on six (6) hours of a written comprehensive examination at the end of coursework. The examination covers all the major areas of study and is given twice a year, in early fall and early spring
