With the flu season fast approaching, we know that parents are concerned about minimizing their children’s exposure to the flu virus. At the Child Development Lab we are making every effort to ensure that our laboratory is a safe and healthy environment for our participants and their families, and that includes taking precautions to prevent the spread of colds and the flu. We have developed a plan for infant, child, and parent health safety during the flu season.

Outlined below are the lab protocols we have in place:

  • All members of the Child Development Lab working directly with infants and children get the seasonal flu vaccine.

  • Research assistants wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately prior to working with infants and children. They use hand sanitizer periodically throughout the visit, and make hand sanitizer available to both parents and children.

  • All toys used by infants and children during their visit to the Child Development Lab are carefully cleaned and disinfected with antibacterial wipes after a visit and again prior to each visit.

  • Lab members who show any cold or flu-like symptoms are required to stay away from the laboratory until symptoms have disappeared.

  • We believe that these precautions should ensure a safe and healthy visit to the Child Development Laboratory. Should you have any questions, please contact us as 301-405-2835 or childdevelopmentlab@umd.edu.
