DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM

Courses within the program are selected from offerings of the Department of Measurement, Statistics and Evaluation and other departments of the University. A program for a student will be structured to take into account the background and future aims of the individual. There is a common core of courses comprised of:

EDMS 645 Quantitative Research Methods I (3)
EDMS 646 Quantitative Research Methods II (3)
EDMS 651 Applied Multiple Regression Analysis (3)
EDMS 779 Mathematical Foundations and Simulation Techniques (3)
EDMS 657 Factor Analysis (3)
EDMS 723 Latent Structure Models (3) or EDMS 724 Modern Measurement Theory (3)
EDMS 771 Multivariate Data Analysis (3)
EDMS 798 Special Problems in Education or EDMS 769 Special Topics (total of 9 credits)
EDMS 899 Doctoral Dissertation Research (12)

In addition, at least 12 credits of elective courses must be selected in consultation with the student's advisor. A minimum of 30 credit hours (including EDMS 899) must be taken following admission. A typical program of study includes approximately 85 credits (including dissertation credits and relevant master's coursework).

In addition to courses, students must complete a doctoral preliminary examination and a doctoral comprehensive examination and are expected to participate in research and publication. A faculty advisor may require courses beyond those specified in this document. The Department does not offer the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree.

The many and varied professional interests of faculty members provide opportunities for presentations of research reports by students as well as faculty. Recent presentations by students have dealt with a variety of original research topics, in such areas as applied statistics, modeling of traits, test construction, test evaluation, and survey research.
