Through a dynamic eight week program, youth explore academic, artistic, and recreational interests in a relaxed and creative environment. Campers participate daily in academic sessions that refresh and review reading, math, writing, and computer literacy skills. In addition, campers take weekly field trips to local museums and leisure sites. Check website for additional information.

Discovering Engineering

Students will explore the different engineering disciplines. Students will participate in various activities including laboratory work and demonstrations, lectures, discussions, computer instruction and a team design project. Support provided by instructors, program advisors, teaching fellows, and peers, to build self-confidence in applying math, science and engineering skills. Students experience campus life by living in a residence hall. Undergraduate residence assistants manage residential area and will live with students in residence hall, plan social activities, and be a resource during the program.


Dates: July 26 - August 1, 2009 (Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning). August 2, 2009 - August 8, 2009 (Identical session).

Students participate in a two-week program. This program is for students entering the 12th grade in September 2009. Students will explore engineering research by attending research lectures, lab demonstrations, development of a research proposal development and the literature search and review for their research project. Students provide their own lunch. Academic Year Activities: Seniors who participate in summer and who have a research project requirement will participate in an academic year long independent project with a faculty member. This will result in a final paper and participation in a research symposium in the spring of 2010. Students will need to provide transportation to campus. The University shuttle bus is available for students who are on SHUTTLE-UM routes.

Students live on campus for one week and explore the world of engineering through fun hands-on activities, laboratory experiments, informative workshops, team design challenges, and seminars with professional engineers. A week-long summer science immersion program sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the College of Chemical & Life Sciences at the University of Maryland. Students considering a career in the sciences will conduct a meaningful scientific inquiry in which they will make observations, formulate hypotheses, design and conduct relevant experiments, analyze data, and generate conclusions. Participants will select one thematic area to explore in depth. Themes include: forensic science, biomedical science and animal behavior and physiology.

LIFT is designed to improve the academic standing of high school students who need an extra LIFT to help them meet their full potential. LIFT provides a unique opportunity to hone students’ math, reading, and writing skills. Approximately twenty-five eighth-grade girls will be chosen to participate in each session of the Program. Part of each morning will be devoted to seeing and handling demonstrations that illustrate fascinating physical ideas. For those familiar with the University's Physics is Phun programs, which have visited many local schools, these demonstrations will be on that level. However, this time each girl will be able to see the apparatus up close and be able to operate it on her own. For the rest of the morning small groups of about five girls each will work in the laboratory. Each group will have its own experimental setup as well as its own teacher. The teacher will supervise the work and discuss the meaning of everything they are doing.

Project Pipeline is a brand new two year pre-collegeprogram (one year only for rising seniors) that prepares and recruits talented students to attend the Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. During the summer 2009 session, students will build an engineering project, interact with college students and staff, while learning more about the College of Engineering. Students remain in the program until they graduate high school, as long as they satisfy certain academic and programmatic requirements. The program is open to rising 11th and 12th grade students.

SAT Strategies

This program is open to all rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. The focus of this workshop will be on successful test-taking skills and reasoning strategies to help students maximize their scores on the SAT. Topics will be presented relevant to the math, verbal and new writing sections of the test. The program provides over 40 hours of instruction, a pre-test and a post-test as well as periodic evaluations to gauge student progress throughout the workshop. Choose from two sessions that will be offered, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Space is limited, register today!


Dates: July 6- July 30, 2009. Classes meet 4 days a week, Monday -Thursday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or 1 p.m.- 4 p.m.

This is a one-week commuter summer camp for rising 7th and 8th graders who are interested in math, science, and engineering. This is an excellent opportunity for participants to work alongside current University of Maryland students in a variety of science and engineering related activities such as finding out how much force it takes to break an aluminum bar, building a wind-powered vehicle, and understanding the ideas behind reverse engineering.

The Department of Entomology is offering its sixth Insect Summer Camp for children. It is non-residential and will run daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Preliminary topics include lectures/activities on Raise your own "special insect pet" ; Insect architecture and diversity; Food consumption: How and why Fred and Anna ate the whole thing; Defense Mechanisms: Insect games of hide and seek; Communication: How insects rap; Social behavior in the insect society; Insect art and crafts ; Other topics depending on interests of campers. These activities will be age appropriate for the students.

This program will introduce 20 elementary (rising 4th, 5th, and 6th grades) per session and 20 middle school/high school freshmen (rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade) per session to building and programming robots using LEGO Mindstorms. Students will learn mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. They will work in small teams using LEGO blocks, motors and sensors. Students use a computer to teach their robot to more, react, and make sounds in order to solve challenges. Students will also take a music and/or rt class. Students are required to bring lunch. Snack will be provided.


Dates: July 6- July 17, 2009, July 20-July 31, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Before and after care available. Students are required to bring their own lunches.

Up, Up and Away Summer Program: Choose from two sessions for Elementary and Middle School Students will be held on the campus of the the University of Maryland, College Park. Students will learn about the science of flight through exciting hands-on activities, field trips and guest speakers. Topics discussed will include compression and expansion air, history of flight, flight patterns, aerodynamic forces. Activities include constructing balsa wood gliders. Students and staff will also take two field trips to which parents will be invited. The program will culminate with an academic fest where family and friends will be invited.

The Upward Bound program provides academic and career counseling to students to assist them in graduating from high school and to gain admission to four-year-post-secondary institutions. It serves as a supplement to its participants’ secondary school experiences and provides an opportunity for improvement in self-esteem and academic and social skills. The six-week session also provides students the opportunity to live in UM residence halls, attend academic classes and engage in cultural & social activities.

Children and youth: 9th grade. Students must attend one of the designated high schools. Applicants must also satisfy low-income criteria and/or potential first generation college student status. The program recruits from: Montgomery Blair, Wheaton, Bladensburg, Central, High Point, Northwood, and Northwestern high schools.

The Young Scholars Program is a great way for rising high school juniors and seniors to get ready for college. During three unforgetable weeks, students explore bold ideas and new ways of thinking. Motivated students have the opportunity to pursue academic interests,explore career opportunities, earn 3 college credits in 3 weeks, and discover college life at Maryland. Students enroll in a 3-credit introductory course, going from theory to practice through field trips or guest speakers. Dynamic instructors create a learning environment that encourages creative problem-solving. Students benefit from Maryland's vast resources, including libraries, computer and instructional lbs, and recreational, residential, and dining facilities.
