University of Maryland Study Abroad

Global Communities
Located within Dorchester Hall, Global Communities is an exciting living experience, rich in cultural diversity and academic enhancement. Students from more than 30 countries and the United States, representing a variety of cultural backgrounds, come together to form an international community and share a common desire to build bridges of cooperation and understanding between cultures. Upon completion of the academic portion of the program and development of a portfolio of global skills, students will receive a Global Competencies notation on their transcript.

College Park Scholars, International Studies Program
The International Studies Program welcomes students who wish to live and learn together and who have an interest in exploring international political, economic, and cultural issues. Our program offers an opportunity to build global understanding and global awareness through academic and experiential learning. One of twelve College Park Scholars living-learning programs, the International Studies Program brings together undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines who share an interest in global issues, politics, and events.  Each entering class of approximately sixty-five students takes courses together during the freshman and sophomore years. The majority of International Studies Scholars reside in Centreville Hall along with Scholars in the Public Leadership, Environmental Studies, Cultures of the Americas, and Earth, Life & Time Programs.

Erik B. Young, M.D. International Travel-Study Awards
Dr. Erik B. Young wishes to support international travel-study for a group of undergraduates each year through the Erik B. Young, M.D. International Travel-Study Awards. The purpose of the program is to give deserving undergraduate students the opportunity to broaden their international horizons while they hone their academic skills.

Prince George's County International Ambassador Scholarship
Graduates from Prince George's county public high schools who are enrolled at the University of Maryland and have reached their sophomore year or above are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The award may be applied to either the winter, spring or summer term 2009. The scholarship is intended to support low-income students, especially those from underrepresented groups, who intend to study abroad in Africa, especially Liberia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ghana, Senegal and South Africa. Awardees will be required to leverage their community's investment in them by participating in outreach activities. This may include sharing their experiences in the public schools, serving as mentors to college-bound high-school students, and volunteering in internationally-oriented organizations in Prince George's County.

British Council USA
British Council USA lists funding and scholarship information for study in the United Kingdom.

Marshall Scholarship
The Marshall Scholarships program awards up to forty scholarships each year to study either at graduate or occasionally undergraduate level at an UK institution in any field of study. Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom.

National Science Foundation
NSF promotes and advances scientific progress in the United States by competitively awarding grants and cooperative agreements for research and education in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering.

DAAD
The German Academic Exchange Service offers undergraduate scholarships to highly qualified undergraduate students for semester, year or short-term study, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Bridging Scholarships
Sponsored by the Association of Teachers of Japanese to assist with travel and living expenses for study abroad in Japan.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. Awards up to $5,000 for study abroad for U.S. students who are also receiving federal Pell Grant funding.

NSEP
The National Security Education Program scholarships assist US undergraduates to acquire skills and experience in less-commonly studied languages and cultures.

Freeman-Asia Program
Freeman-Asia program is designed to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing students with information and financial assistance.

Fulbright Program
The Fulbright Program, administered by the Institute of International Education, provides grants for graduate students, scholars and professionals, and teachers U.S. and other countries.

JET Programme
The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme aims to promote grass roots internationalization at the local level by inviting young overseas graduates to assist in international exchange and foreign language education in local governments, boards of education and elementary, junior and senior high schools throughout Japan. It seeks to foster ties between Japanese citizens (mainly youth) and JET participants at the person-to-person level.

Council of Europe North-South Centre
An autonomous institution of the Council of Europe, the North-South Centre currently has 22 member countries. Its mission is to promote dialogue and cooperation between Europe, the South of the Mediterranean and Africa through building a global citizenship based on human rights and citizens' responsibilities.

Global Campaign for Education
The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is a civil society movement that seeks to end the global education crisis. GCE strives to hold governments accountable for their promises to provide Education for All. The GCE's mission is to make sure that governments act now to deliver the right of every individual to a free quality public education.

Global Education Collaborative
Online community for those interested in global education.

Globalization 101
Hosted by the Levin Institute of the State University of New York, this site includes sample lesson plans, mostly for high school students, on a broad range of topics on globalization. It also includes news, video clips and additional content.

Global Learning Portal
The Global Learning Portal (GLP) is a multi-stakeholder alliance launched by USAID and FHI 360 to improve education outcomes in developing countries through the use of collaboration technologies. GLP builds platforms for educators to collaborate, share content and knowledge, and acquire skills. GLP has more than 4,000 registered users in 169 countries and territories. Headquartered in Washington, DC, GLP's activities span the globe.

Heifer International for Educators
Heifer international offer a wide range of educational resources, including lesson plans based on national standards for Pre-K through eighth graders, video documentaries, games and activities to teach students about world hunger. Heifer International also has college and university programs to give students, faculty and staff learning opportunities and resources to educate their campus about the issues surrounding hunger and poverty and sustainable development.

Partnership for 21st Century Skills
The Partnership for 21st Century Skills is a national organization that advocates for 21st century readiness for every student. As the United States continues to compete in a global economy that demands innovation, P21 and its members provide tools and resources to help the U.S. education system keep up by fusing the three Rs and four Cs (critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity and innovation). While leading districts and schools are already doing this, P21 advocates for local, state and federal policies that support this approach for every school.

Route 21
The goal of Route 21, created by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, is to provide an online interactive tool that demonstrates how 21st century skills can be supported through standards, professional development, assessments and curriculum and instruction.

SIETAR – the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research
SIETAR members work within many environments and professions—business and industry, consulting, training, K-12 and higher education, counseling, all aspects of the media and arts.
