This seminar has been developed to build from the semester colloquium series of the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education (MIMAUE). Each semester, MIMAUE develops a colloquium focusing on current and critical issues related to the schooling of minority children in urban schools. This semester, the topic under discussion is the education of immigrant and other minority children in our public schools.
As the current administration and the U.S. Congress consider modifications of NCLB, now is the time to review and examine the legislation' expectations as compared to its actual outcomes. We will attempt to decode the complexity of NCLB in terms of its impact on LEP and minority students. Immigrant populations will include major groups of students including Latinos, African, AfroCarribean and Asians. A study of local, state and national policy affecting how schools accommodate Immigrant students will be studied through readings and guest speakers. Discussion about teacher education practices that prepare teachers to effectively teach immigrant children will be a major focus of the course.
