On Friday, July 14th our 2017 Maryland Data Analytics Project (MDAP) summer camp participants held an end-of-camp event for MDAP participants' parents and the UMD community. The event included an overview of the camp, camper superlatives, and a gallery walk of campers' data analytics projects. MDAP participants (30 rising 7th, 8th, & 9th graders from area schools and communities) have spent the previous 3 weeks engaging in activities that immerse them in the data analytics cycle (1 - gathering data, 2 - analyzing data, 3 - visualizing data, 4 - explaining the significance of data).

The Maryland Data Analytics Program (MDAP) engages rising 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade boys and girls in a series of activities that aim to:

1) build their knowledge of statistics concepts and the data science process,
2) increase their motivation and interest in advanced mathematics and statistics courses in high school and college, and
3) expose them to STEM careers, particularly in the cognate area of statistics and data analytics.

MDAP situates activities in sports data analytics and engages campers' interest and fascination with sports and professional athletes and professional athletic team performance. Funded by a $50,000 grant from the National Security Agency, MDAP builds on the 2013 - 2016 Mathletics summer camp (partially funded by the Mathematical Association of America - MAA).  The Mathletics Summer Camp was founded by Dr. Stephanie Timmons Brown (MIMAUE) and Dr. Lawrence M. Clark (TLPL). Building on our experiences with Mathletics, MDAP activities include classroom sessions facilitated by certified and experienced mathematics and statistics teachers, data collection and analysis activities, tours and sessions at UMD athletics facilities including the Xfinity Center, Gossett Football House, and UMD Golf Course.  Participants complete and present a data analytics project during the final week of the camp.

Congratulations to all of our MDAP campers and many thanks to the MDAP staff who planned and facilitated this successful event!
