The University of Maryland is hosting its 3rd annual Social Justice Day. The day will include activities focused on this year's campus-wide theme of immigration, migration and refugee issues.

Known for her roles as Maritza Ramos on Orange is the New Black and Lina on Jane the Virgin, Guerrero has also published a memoir about her struggles as a student. She will share her personal experiences and her work as an advocate for immigration reform. In conversation with UMD's Undocuterps students, plus book signing.

Program highlights include:

9-10:45 - Language in Pursuit of Social Justice, 2130 HJ Patterson: In this panel organized by TLPL, Linguistics and ECE international experts on language, race and gender will discuss how language is used to discriminate. 

11-12:15 - Mini-Ted Talks in 6137 McKeldin Library Special Events Room where experts across campus will discuss issues of immigration, identity and education. One of the four mini-TED Talks is being delivered by COE faculty member Julie J. Park. 

12:30-1:15 - Social Justice Day Awards Reception (6137 McKeldin Library)

1:30-3pm - Plenary panel: Open or Closed Borders, or Something in Between, 6137 McKeldin Library: A cross campus panel of experts will debate policy that affects our borders, engaging arguments for different sides and ethical, political, and human impacts resulting from the different solutions.

3:30-5pm - Collaborative Questions and New Directions for Social Justice and Education: An Interactive Discussion, 6137 McKeldin Special Events Room, Panel organized by TLPL and Melinda Martin-Beltran on social justice, immigration and education. Participants also include students from International High School of Langley Park, and Juan David Cortes, Peter Leone, Rossina Zamora Liu, Jennifer Turner, Cixin Wang, Margaret Anne Walker. 

3:30-5pm - Social Justice Issues Facing Conflict and Environmental Refugees: A Simulation, 3237 Benjamin Building: Panel and Simulation by International Education Policy to discuss and simulate issues facing refugees access to education with Michael Scott Brick, Anne Corwith, Yasmeen Khan, Erin Sorenson, Li-Ying Tan, Kate Williams and Jing Lin.

5:30pm - Keynote: Hoff Theater, Stamp: UMD Undocuterps join actress and activist Diane Guerrero, a compelling advocate for immigration reform who will read from her memoir and discuss issues of social justice and immigration with our students. Book signing to follow.
