Program Overview

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in School Improvement Leadership, Online (Z138) is an 18-credit graduate program that targets experienced teachers and leaders who aspire in becoming school-system administrators. 

This program provides a statewide, cohort-based professional learning experience in meeting the requirements for state certification. Successful completion leads to Maryland Administrator I certification eligibility.

In our program, we foster communities of practice focused on building the capacity of program participants to promote academic excellence and support the social emotional needs of all members of our school communities.  As part of our effort to align with the current landscape and challenges confronting schools today, we are partnering with local school districts to recruit teacher leaders who can leverage the skills, knowledge and dispositions necessary to address learning losses, teacher shortages and leadership attrition that have confounded schools as a result of the Covid pandemic.

Requirements

  • Statement of Purpose

  • Minimum 4 years of classroom teaching experience in a Maryland public school system
  • A current Maryland state teaching license (at any level, and in any content area)
  • Completion of a Master’s degree in education
  • Proven teacher leadership roles or responsibilities
  • Active support of school administration
  • A minimum of 3.0 UG GPA, and a 3.5 graduate GPA

    • EDUC 646 Leading Instructional Excellence
    • EDUC 645 Leading Instructional Improvement
  • Summer:
    • EDUC 671 Education Law, Finance, and Policy
    • EDUC 689 Practicum/Internship
  • Fall:
    • EDUC 689 Practicum/Internship
  • 3-semester (+summers) cohort program = 16-20 months from start to completion
  • 5-course leadership development sequence, including leadership for continuous improvement, instructional leadership, family and community engagement, and school operations management
  • Integration of the tools of Improvement Science throughout the coursework, including Problem of Practice, Fishbone Diagram, and PDriver Diagram
  • 6-month supervised Internship, w/faculty advisor
  • Culminating Leadership Portfolio
