At 96, Dr. Jacob D. Goering (PhD '59) is actively involved in philanthropy at the North Newton Community Foundation in Newton, Kansas, which was founded two years ago. A long-time scholar of human development, Professor Goering is an emeritus faculty member of the College of Education's Institute for Child Study. [July 2014].
Dr. Thomas Shipley (BS ’56) has published a new book, The Revitalization of the American Classroom, which draws on his experiences in a long and productive career as a teacher and administrator. The book is described as “an inexpensive, briefly stated, common-sense approach that will breathe new life and vitality into the traditional American classroom.” [March 2015]

This February, Randall Anderson (BS '69) presented the second of a three-part series at the Renfrew Institution on Water, Wagons and Wheels: The Evolution of Travel and Transport." [July 2014]
Betty Ann Ernst Bauer (BS '65) has written a book of historical fiction for upper elementary-grade children about Ancestral Puebloan life in the American Southwest. Published this year by Portamento, Tamika and Friends is a story of three children whose families migrated from Mesa Verde in the late 1200s. [July 2014]
Artist Jean Doran (BA 62) has recently been involved in charity to benefit the Lewes Historical Society in coastal Delaware. [July 2014]
Virginia S. George (BS 69) received the Honorary Alumna Recognition Award from Alfred University. [July 2014]
Thomas Novotny (BS 62) was inducted into the 2012 Howard County Community Sports Hall of Fame. [July 2014]
Dr. Bernice R. Sandler (PhD 69) was featured on ESPNs The Power of IX Legends, celebrating the anniversary of this landmark occasion. [July 2014]
June E. Streckfus (BS '68) is retiring after serving for twenty-two years as head of the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education. She has worked to connect the worlds of education and big business for the betterment of kids STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math) skills. [July 2014]

1970s
James H. Bruns (BS '70) has been named to a new leadership role in the system of nine U.S. Navy museums around the country. Bruns will assume responsibility of the Naval History and Heritage Command's museum system operations, serving as Assistant Director of the national museum system while continuing to direct the National Museum of the United States Navy, the flagship museum located at the Washington Navy Yard. Bruns has previously served as vice president of Montclair State University in New Jersey, as founding director of the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum, and as president of the Atlanta Historical Society, where he managed the acquisition of the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum and also assembled the most comprehensive Civil War collection in the country. Kathleen Cowles (BS 75) has joined a team of top-level principals at Deep Water Point, a business navigator for federal contractors located in Bethesda. [July 2014]
Dr. Delores C. Datcher (MEd 74) was honored with the 2012 Verizon Community Innovator Award at Verizons Black History Month Celebration. [July 2014]
Christine A. Edwards (BA 74) was awarded the 2012 Transformative Leadership Award by InsideCounsel, which recognizes women general counsels who are catalysts for change. [July 2014]
John Enkiri (MEd 78) retired after 40 years of service as an educator and administrator in the Prince Georges County Public Schools. [July 2014]
Dr. Dana E. Friedman (MA 79) was honored with the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award, bestowed annually on those who make an impact on public education in Nassau County, NY. [July 2014]
Dr. Diane M. Gayeski (PhD 79, MA 75) was honored by the International Association of Business Communicators Research Foundation with its Lifetime Foundation Friend Award. [July 2014]
Sharon P. Levin (MEd 72) is the Head of School for Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy in Bryn Mawr, PA. [July 2014]
Carolee B. Miller (BA '70) received the 2014 National Middle Level Art Educator of the Year Award at the National Art Education Association convention in San Diego. This award is given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service by a dedicated art educator. [July 2014]
Dr. Ted D. Spring (PhD 79) was appointed as President of Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC. [July 2014]
Valerie Stasik (BS 70) published her first novel, Incidental Daughter, earlier this year. [July 2014]
John Tomaselli (BA 79) is Chief Operating Officer for SAP National Security Services, a software provider for national security and critical infrastructures. [July 2014]
Jim Wharton (BS 73) is retiring after forty years of service as a music teacher in schools around Baltimore, most recently Catonsville High, where he has taught since 1988. [July 2014]

Sarah B. Andrus (MA 86) was honored by the Direct Selling Education Foundation (DSEF) with its Circle of Honor Award, the highest honor bestowed upon those who demonstrate outstanding service and commitment to DSEF. [July 2014]
Jan Cullinane (MEd 80) has written a new book, AARPs The Single Womans Guide to Retirement, which was published last October by John Wiley & Sons. [July 2014]
Eric D. Ebersole (MEd 86), who has taught in Howard County for 33 years, is running for a seat representing District 12 in the Maryland House of Delegates assisted in his campaign by his wife Dr. Tara Ebersole (MEd 87) and his daughter Caroline Ebersole (MEd 13). [July 2014]
Dr. Barbara B. Hines (PhD 81) was named the 2012 Outstanding Woman in Journalism and Mass Communication by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. [July 2014]
Dr. Kimberly Hoagwood (PhD 87) was appointed as the Cathy & Stephen Graham Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center. [July 2014]
Cheryl LaSota Holdefer (MEd 89), currently an assistant principal in Montgomery County, has published her first novel, Victorias Run, which is informed by her experiences as a marathon runner and race organizer. [July 2014]
Dr. Martin Nadelman (EdD 87) is retiring after a 41-year career as an administrator in higher education, most recently serving as President of Alamance Community College and Martin Community College. [July 2014]
Dr. Thomas OBrien (PhD 87), professor of science education at Binghamton University, is the co-editor of a new book from NSTA Press, Science for the Next Generation: Preparing for the New Standards, a guide for K-5 teachers using the Next Generation Science Standards. [July 2014]
Dr. Jose M. Ortiz (EdD 88) was named Chancellor of Peralta Community College District in Oakland, CA. [July 2014]
Dr. Brad Sachs (PhD 83), founder and director of The Father Center in Columbia, Maryland, has published a new book, Family-Centered Treatment with Struggling Young Adults: A Clinicians Guide to the Transition from Adolescence to Autonomy (Routledge, 2012). [July 2014]
William E. Slezak (BS 82) was appointed as Vice President of Healthcare for North America at the UMF Corporation. [July 2014]
Daniel Souders (BS 87) has taken a position as Senior Safety and Health Specialist at EA Engineering, Science and Technology, Inc. [July 2014]
Dr. April L. Vari (MEd 86) has been named Vice President for Student Affairs at Delaware Valley College. [July 2014]
College of Education graduate Tom Willis (80 B.A., 88 M.Ed) was born with a no problem philosophy. He was also born without arms and hands. Yet, Willis has not let his physical difference stand in the way of living life to its fullest. It was that cando attitude, adaptability and resourcefulness that further ensured his success at the University of Maryland. He graduated with honors in three and a half years with a 4.0 GPA. Willis current endeavor involves his love of baseball through a project called Pitch for Awareness. Willis is traveling to major league baseball stadiums across the country to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. [July 2014]

Dr. Marsha Guenzler-Stevens (PhD '93) has been honored by the NASPA Women's Center with the Zenobia Hikes Award in recognition of her commitment to the advancement of women in higher education and student affairs. [July 2014]
Dr. Jacqueline Leonard (PhD 97), newly appointed as Director of the Science and Mathematics Teaching Center at the University of Wyoming, has co-edited a new book, The Brilliance of Black Children in Mathematics (Information Age, 2013). [July 2014]
Stephanie McKenna (BA 99) has been named Teacher of the Year at Weathersfield High School in Connecticut, where she teaches ninth- and tenth-grade English. [July 2014]
Gary Milwit (BS '93) has been appointed to the advisory board of TeamVisibility, a sales performance management platform. The American Association of Inside Sales Professionals (AA-ISP) has recognized Milwits success in sales and leadership, honoring him for Excellence in Execution in 2012 and naming him Executive of the Year in 2013. Prior to his sales career, Milwit was a high school teacher, football and baseball coach, and athletic director, and he extends his coaching philosophies to sales. [July 2014]
Dr. Denise F. Noldon (PhD 98) was appointed as President of Contra Costa College. [July 2014]
Dr. Daniel Rodriguez (PhD 98) was appointed last year as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University. [July 2014]

Aeriel Anderson (MEd 09) was appointed as Assistant Dean and Pan-Asian and Asian American Advisor in the Office of Pluralism and Leadership at Dartmouth University. [July 2014]
Dr. Carolyn McNamara Barry (PhD '01), associate professor of psychology at Loyola University, is the co-editor of Emerging Adults' Religiousness and Spirituality: Meaning-Making in an Age of Transition, newly released from Oxford University Press. This is the first book of a series on emerging adults, for which Dr. Larry Nelson (PhD '00), professor of family life at Brigham Young University, serves as series editor. Emerging Adults' Religiousness and Spirituality seeks to understand how the developmental process of meaning-making encompasses American emerging adults' religiousness and spirituality, emphasizing their centrality in the psychology of human development. Chapters written by an interdisciplinary group of authors explore such topics as the benefits and detriments of religiousness and spirituality to emerging adults; contexts and socializing agents such as parents and peers, the media, religious communities, and universities; and variations of religiousness and spirituality concerning gender, sexuality, culture, and social position. Dr. Tara Beziat (BS 02) recently earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Kent State University and began teaching in fall, 2012 at the University of South Carolina, Aiken. [July 2014]
Dr. Julie (Wojslawowicz) Bowker (PhD ’05), recently promoted to Associate Professor of Psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo, has co-edited a new book, The Handbook of Solitude: Psychological Perspectives on Social Isolation, Social Withdrawal, and Being Alone (Wiley-Blackwell, 2014). She and her husband Matthew also recently welcomed into the world their daughter, Zoe Catherine Bowker. [March 2015]
Dr. Michelle Asha Cooper (PhD 06) was recognized by the Black Womens Agenda for outstanding contributions to advancing, securing, and protecting the rights of Black women and their families. [July 2014]
Dr. Lynn D. Darling (PhD 00, MEd 95) was appointed as Director of Mississippi State Universitys Early Childhood Institute. [July 2014]
Caroline Eick (05 Ph.D.) is Assistant Professor and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton professor in the School of Education and Human Services at Mount St. Marys University in Maryland. Eick was honored as the Colleges Outstanding New Scholar at the Alumni Awards ceremony. Her intersecting research interests include: historical perspectives on processes of integration in secondary education (1954present); theory in educational history, global trends in education, and multiracial/multilingual students. Caroline is fluent in French, Croatian, and Spanish and espouses a transformative philosophy of education. [July 2014]
Dr. Toby Jenkins Henry (MEd '01), an assistant professor of higher education at the University of Hawaii Manoa, was selected as 2013 Outstanding Black Alumna at her undergraduate alma mater, the University of South Carolina. [July 2014]
Dr. Danette Gerald Howard (PhD 07) was appointed as Secretary of the Maryland Higher Education Commission. [July 2014]
Jennifer Jimenez Maraña (MEd 03) has been named Director of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at McDaniel College. [July 2014]
George McGurl (BS 02), a science teacher at Burleigh Manor Middle School, has been named a finalist for 2013-14 Maryland Teacher of the Year, having already been honored earlier this year with an Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award from the Washington Post . [July 2014]
Dr. Louis Nagel (PhD ’09) received the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jewish Educators Assembly (JEA). The JEA is an international organization for Conservative movement education administrators. He currently serves the organization as a vice president and chair of the Professional Development Committee. [March 2015]
Dr. Andre Perry (PhD 04) has been named the founding dean of the new College of Urban Education at Davenport University. [July 2014]
Dr. Paul E. Pitre (PhD 02) was appointed to the Future of Flight Foundations Board of Directors. Future of Flight uses commercial aviation to inspire innovative thinking in exploring solutions to critical global issues. [July 2014]
This March, Jennifer Markey Reed (BA 08) and her husband Timothy welcomed into the world their second son, Connor Jacob Reed. Mrs. Reed is a school counselor with Queen Annes County Public Schools. [July 2014]
Nikole Brugnoli Sheaffer (MEd '04) received the Champions for Children Award from Shady Lane Preschool. This annual award recognizes dedication to improving the lives of Pittsburg children through professional or volunteer work, financial support, advocacy, research, or other efforts. Sheaffer is innovation director at the Environmental Charter School at Frick Park and was formerly a fourth-grade teacher in the Montgomery County Public Schools. [July 2014]

Christine Khouri (MEd '12) received the 2014 Outstanding New Teacher Award from the American University chapter of the professional educator association Phi Delta Kappa. [July 2014]
Dr. Amanda Knapp (PhD '13) received the 2013 Sloan-C Effective Practice Award at the 19th Annual International Conference on Online Learning in Orlando, Florida, for her dissertation research, which examined the relationship between best online instructional practice and undergraduate student perceptions of instructor credibility. Dr. Knapp serves as Academic Standards and Policy Specialist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where her efforts center on advocating for students' fair and equitable treatment in matters of policy. Dr. Steven Lockard (PhD '13) has been named deputy superintendent for Fairfax County Public Schools, effective August 1. Lockard currently serves as deputy superintendent of Frederick County Public Schools in Maryland. [July 2014]
Eupil K. Muhn (11 M.Ed.) is an English teacher at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was named the 2012 Marian Greenblatt Education Fund Rising Star Teacher of the Year, an award given annually to a first or secondyear Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher who demonstrates exceptional promise.
