Terrapin Teachers is an innovative program designed to produce a new generation of highly qualified instructors in STEM subjects. In this program, you can earn a STEM degree PLUS eligibility for certification as a middle or high school teacher. What is the process to becoming a science teacher in this program? Students enrolled in this program earn a B.S. in Science Education and a teaching certificate valid in the state of Maryland. Students typically spend X years taking general education courses, followed by coursework in educational psychology, science education methods, etc. In their final semester, students receive a placement at an area middle or high school and teach with the support of a cooperating teacher for X weeks...

Faculty Spotlight

Anisha Campbell
Dr. Anisha Campbell is a distinguished educator and leader who has more than sixteen years of experience in higher education.  In 2008, while at Bowie State University, she became the principal investigator of a five-year, $12.4 million Math Science Partnership grant awarded by the National Science Foundation. As a result of the grant, Anisha developed two community outreach programs at the middle- and high school levels in collaboration with Prince George’s County Public Schools that focused on increasing the participation of underrepresented groups in STEM.

As the associate director, Dr. Campbell is the face of the Terrapin Teachers program.  She plays a very key role in the program's success.  She is in charge of executing all the marketing efforts, fundraising, monitoring the program budget, and supervising the master teachers and the program management specialist.

Advising for Current Students

Academic Advising is an essential part of your academic experience at UMD.

Our mission is to help you understand the academic requirements and curricular offerings in the College of Education (COE). Our advisors:

  • Assist you with realistically reviewing and planning your academic progress and discussing its relationship to successful degree completion.
  • Inform you about different campus resources and services that will help you to make the most of your experience while at the University of Maryland.
  • Administer mandatory advising meetings each semester (which are required for all current COE majors). 

*NOTE:  Secondary Education majors must be advised by their Content Area Advisor in addition to meeting with a College of Education Advisor.

Admission Requirements

For information on undergraduate admission to the University, please click here

Once admitted to the University, students in the College of Education must meet the Selective Admissions requirements in order to proceed into the Professional portion of the Terrapin Teachers Science Education program. The Selective Admissions requirements for the Terrapin Teachers Science Education program are as follows:

Academic Requirements

  • Completion of a minimum of 45 credits
  • Cumulative UMD GPA of 2.75 or higher; 3.0 GPA is recommended for best consideration
  • Completion of lower-level Fundamental English requirement with a “C-” or better
  • Completion of lower-level Fundamental Math requirement with a “C-” or better
  • Minimum passing scores on a Basic Skills Tests (see advisor for details)

Gateway Courses

  • Satisfactory completion of TLPL 401 with a “B-” or better
  • Satisfactory completion of the upper level content area courses.  Consult Advisor for content area GPA requirement.

Experiential Requirements

  • A resume that shows prior experience in the education field with youth in the age range you intend to teach
  • A written goal statement
  • Two letters of recommendation (one must be from a faculty member or instructor in your content area)
  • Satisfactory rating on the College of Education Foundational Competencies/Model Code of Ethics for Educators

 

How to Apply

STEP ONE: Apply for undergraduate admission to the University.  

       Once admitted to the University, proceed to Step Two after working with a COE Academic Advisor.

STEP TWO:  Please submit your application to the Professional Teacher Education Program online.
