Professors Allan Wigfield and Ji Seung Yang recently received a grant from NSF to do a longitudinal validation study of grit and its relations to STEM outcomes. They will do their research with an ethnically and economically diverse sample of high school student, beginning when students are in middle school in 8th grade and following them across the high school transition. They will use sophisticated Item Response Theory (IRT) and other latent variable modeling procedures to assess grit’s convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity, and will explore gender and ethnic differences in students’ grit.

Allan Wigfield, Jeffrey Harring, and Laura Stapleton, in collaboration with Professors Benjamin Nagengast and Ulrich Trautwein at the Hector Research Institute at the University of Tübingen in Germany, received funding from the UMD and University of Tübingen International Collaboration on Research and Training in the Natural and Social Sciences, to support collaborative research and student-faculty exchanges in academic years 2015-16 and 2016-17. HDQM students participating in the project are Ji An, Jessica Gladstone, Chen Li, Katherine Muenks, Emily Rosenzweig, Lara Turci, and Xiang Zheng. The group holds monthly video conferences, and will visit each other in Europe and the U. S., to develop new projects focused on assessing the developmental validity of measures of motivation and personality development, and other projects of mutual interest

The Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) recognized two HDQM faculty members – Dr. Nathan Fox and Dr. Kenneth Rubin – for their many contributions to the field of child development. Both were presented at the biennial meeting of SRCD (Society for Research in Child Development) March 19-21 in Philadelphia, PA.

Ken Rubin was selected as a University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher for 2015-2016. He will present his DST talk on October 6, 2015.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences has appointed Natasha Cabrera to the Committee on Supporting the Parents of Young Children. According to the IOM, the committee will conduct research to “inform a national framework for strengthening the capacity of parents of young children birth to age 8.”

Congratulations to Melanie Killen who was awarded the Semester Graduate School Research and Scholarship Award for AY 2015-16.

Provost Mary Ann Rankin visited CYC on Tuesday, October 7. The provost toured CYC and observed each classroom. She was very impressed with the program and is knowledgeable about project based learning. read more

Student News

Emily Rosenzweig, a doctoral candidate in human development, received a UMD International Graduate Research Fellowship, to travel to Tübingen, Germany, during May- June of 2016. She will work with Drs. Benjamin Nagengast and Ulrich Trautwein at the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology, working on studies of students’ motivation and engagement.
