Park Receives Early Career Award at ASHE Conference

COLLEGE PARK, MD (January, 2015) – Assistant Professor Julie J. Park of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education was the 2014 recipient of the ASHE Early Career Award, which was presented to her at the Association for the Study of Higher Education annual conference held in November in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Park's research examines racial diversity and equity in higher education, affirmative action and college admissions, the role of religion in social capital networks, and conditions affecting interracial friendship.  Readers of the College's alumni magazine, Endeavors, will be familiar with Dr. Park's research on issues of campus climate and her book When Diversity Drops: Race, Religion, and Affirmative Action in Higher Education (Rutgers UP, 2013), the subject of a feature story in our winter 2014 issue.

The Early Career Award is a top honor, recognizing faculty's contributions to the field of higher education near the outset of their academic careers. This is the second year running that a College of Education faculty member has won this award: Dr. Kimberly Griffin, an associate professor in CHSE, received it last year for her work on underrepresented communities in higher education.

Dr. Julie J. Park is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of College Student Development and on the research advisory board for the national Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education. Dr. Park earned her Ph.D. in Education, with a concentration in Asian American studies, from the University of California at Los Angeles.
