Special Seminar for Teachers: Social Media and Digital Culture

COLLEGE PARK, MD (February, 2013) – The Seminars for Teachers program is pleased to offer this special workshop – Social Media and Digital Cultures- which aims to give teachers the tools to:

  • learn how to craft exciting, relevant, and purposeful technology–linked courses using existing expertise plus some common-sense principles for creating and managing technological communities;
  • explore free or cheap tools to expand the domains of learning;
  • learn to integrate social media into learning outcomes, transferrable skills, and leading–edge principles of learning.

The instructor will review the design process for different assignments and courses that included social media so that participants can see these principles at work. Common fears and obstacles will be discussed in relation to historical debates on technology's utopic or dystopic potential (e.g., with the telegraph, the motion picture, teen 'sexting') and more mundane institutional barriers (e.g., administrators, objectives, and finances).

The workshop is planned to cover two days, so all teachers should plan to attend both days. If you would like a graduate workshop credit, you must complete both days to receive the credit. More information about the seminar and fee structure is on our website:
