In an episode of the Journal of Policy of Analysis and Management’s “Closer Look” podcast, Associate Professor David Blazar joins one of his co-authors to discuss their research on Teacher Academy of Maryland (TAM), a “grow-your-own” program designed to build a local teacher pipeline.

The conversation explores how the program gives high school students early exposure to teaching through coursework and hands-on experience, with the goal of identifying and recruiting prospective teachers locally. They also share their research findings, which reveals that these types of programs do increase students’ interest in teaching.

“TAM increased the likelihood of students becoming a teacher,” said Blazar. “There were also measurable impacts on other outcomes, including high school graduation and type of college enrollment (four-year vs. two-year college).”
