COLLEGE PARK, MD (March 2011) The College of Education has maintained its ranking as one of the top schools of education in the country. The College was ranked 23rd, according to the U.S.News & World Report survey released on March 15, 2011. The College moved up from its 2011 rank of 25th. The full college rankings were released in early April and the College has nine college departments and programs ranked, with four receiving top 10 honors.
"We are very honored that the University of Marylands College of Education continues to be among the best colleges of education in the nation. Our department and program rankings are a direct indication of the strength and commitment of our faculty and staff, the achievements of our students, and the high regard of our peers," said Dean Donna Wiseman.
Four departments in the College received top 10 honors, including the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services, which garnered the number one position in the country for the twelfth year in a row. The Department of Special Education also reclaimed a top ten position, ranking 9th this year.
Dr. Dennis Kivlighan, Jr., Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services said, "We are pleased to once again be ranked number one by U.S. News and World Report. It is a tribute to our talented faculty, students, and alumni."
The following College departments and programs are ranked among the Top 25 in the nation:
- Department of Counseling and Personnel Services (1st)
- Educational Psychology Program in the Department of Human Development (7th)
- Department of Special Education (9th - tied with University of Minnesota-Twin Cities)
- Higher Education Administration Program in the Department of Education Leadership, Higher Education, and International Education (10th – tied with Harvard University)
- Curriculum and Instruction (15th)
- Education Policy (13th – tied with Ohio State University and New York University-Steinhardt)
- Elementary Teacher Education (13th)
- Secondary Teacher Education (14th – tied with University of Texas-Austin)
- Education Administration & Supervision (16th – tied with Texas A&M- College Station and University of Pennsylvania)
"The rankings reflect the work of our graduate faculty and our great students. I am proud of our programs and very proud to be a part of the College of Education," said Margaret McLaughlin, Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research.
The 2012 rankings are released in 2011, as part of U.S. News magazine's annual guide of "America's Best Graduate Schools."
