Schlossberg Honored as Distinguished Alumna by Columbia University

COLLEGE PARK, MD (March, 2016) – Professor Emerita Nancy K. Schlossberg, who taught at the College of Education for twenty-six years, will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from Teachers College, Columbia University, at a ceremony taking place on the Columbia campus in New York City on Saturday, April 2, 2016. The ceremony is part of Academic Festival 2016, Teachers College’s annual homecoming event, which will also feature a panel discussion of Dr. Schlossberg’s work.

Dr. Schlossberg is no stranger to the limelight. A longtime counseling psychology professor, she is world-famous as an expert on adult transitions, retirement, career development, adult learning, and intergenerational relationships. A former president of the National Career Development Association and faculty member at Wayne State University, Howard University, and Pratt Institute, in retirement she gives lectures and runs workshops on managing change in her role as co-president of the consulting firm TransitionWorks.

She has penned numerous self-help books on coping with transitions, including Overwhelmed: Coping with Life’s Ups and Downs (2nd ed., M. Evans, 2007) and Revitalizing Retirement: Reshaping Your Identity, Relationships, and Purpose (American Psychological Association, 2009). In 2011, Springer published the fourth edition of Counseling Adults in Transition, a textbook exploring her theory of transitions which she co-wrote with Mary L. Anderson, an assistant professor at Western Michigan University, and Jane Goodman, an emerita professor of counseling at Oakland University.

In her work, Dr. Schlossberg has been quoted by USA Today, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Reader’s Digest, and U.S. News & World Report, among other publications. She appeared on PBS’s In the Prime, Derek McGinty’s national talk radio show, CBS This Morning, CBS Evening News, and the NBC Knowledge Series, and in 2007 she was featured in a 90-minute PBS special, “Retire Smart, Retire Happy,” which focused on one of her books. And she has delivered keynote addresses for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the American Counseling Association, among many other organizations.

Dr. Schlossberg was singled out for honors during her tenure at the College of Education, too. In 2009, the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services (which later became part of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education) named its newly renovated conference room and library in her honor.
