Dr. Theresa R. Alban Named Superintendent

Dr. Theresa R. Alban (Ph.D. ’02) received her degree from the Department of Measurement and Statistics.

COLLEGE PARK, MD (April 2011) – In early April, the Board of Education of Frederick County voted unanimously to name College of Education graduate, Dr. Theresa R. Alban (Ph.D.’02), Superintendent of Frederick County Public Schools. Dr. Alban will begin her tenure as Superintendent on July 1, 2011 and will replace Dr. Linda Burgee who will be retiring after thirty years of service to the Frederick County public school system, seven of them as Superintendent.

"As a long-time educator in many nearby districts, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead Frederick County Public Schools," said Dr. Alban. "My commitment to parents, staff, and all residents is to continue to foster educational excellence, while realizing that these are challenging times. I thank the Board of Education for this opportunity and for its confidence in my leadership. Both my husband and I look forward to living and working in this wonderful community."

Dr. Alban received her BA in Elementary Education and Special Education, summa cum laude, from the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore. She has a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from Loyola College in Baltimore, and a Ph.D. in Measurement, Statistics and Evaluation from the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park.

She has spent her entire 30-year career working in Maryland school systems. Currently, she is the Chief Operating Officer for the Howard County Public School System where she is responsible for school facilities, technology, transportation, research and assessment, student information systems, and emergency preparedness. She is the first woman to have held that position.
