City of Borders

WEB NEWS RELEASE

COLLEGE PARK, MD (February 2011) – In the heart of Jerusalem stands an unusual symbol of unity that defies generations of segregation, violence, and prejudice. City of Borders, an award winning film, follows the daily lives of five Israelis and Palestinians at Jerusalem's only gay bar called Shushan, as they navigate the minefield of politics, religion, and discrimination to live and love openly and create an island of peace in a land divided by war.

The College of Education will be hosting an exclusive movie screening and conversation with the director, Yun Suh on February 15, 2010 (details below). There will also be a Special Conversation with Ms. Suh earlier in the afternoon. Both events are free and open to the public.

This event is co-sponsored by the University of Maryland's HAMSA, the Jewish LGBTQQIA student organization; the College of Education's Office of International Initiatives; the Departments of Education Leadership, Higher Education & International Education, Counseling & Personnel Services, Education Policy Studies, and Curriculum & Instruction; Jewish Studies; Film Studies; MICA and J-Street U.

Dr. Noah Drezner, assistant professor in EDHI and HAMSA's faculty advisor, encourages participation in what promises to be a powerful event. He says, "We are excited to explore how shared sexual identity can overcome generations of political and religious difference."

City of Borders is a winner of: Teddy Audience Award, Berlin International Film Festival; Best International Feature, Vancouver Queer Film Festival; Best Documentary, Barcelona International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival; Grand Prix, Belgrade Documentary & Short Film Festival; Grand Jury Prize, Montreal Human Rights Film Festival; Best Documentary, Middle East Film Festival New Orleans; Best LGBT Film, Ann Arbor Film Festival.
