COLLEGE PARK, MD (April, 2012) For the past ten years, the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education has been making an impact in the lives of young people throughout Maryland. Working fervently to improve the academic outcomes of minority and other underserved students through its research and outreach, the Institute is working on the ground to challenge the status quo and is making strides in closing the achievement gap.
The Institute develops and executes programs that directly impact elementary, middle and high school students in the Washington–Baltimore corridor by providing college preparation, internship, mentoring, writing, and mathematics enrichment services to thousands of students. In addition to working directly with the students, the Institute also provides professional development to hundreds of teachers from 14 states and 75 schools.
When asked about her experience participating in one of the Institute’s programs, Ms. Melissa Pearson, a senior at Fairmont Heights High School in Prince George's County remarks, “It’s hard believing in yourself if nobody else does. MIMAUE believed in us, and because of them, we now believe in ourselves. The program has taken us, who many thought that high school was the end of the road, and is turning us into future doctors, lawyers, and maybe even presidents. The Institute gave me the push I needed to succeed and put me on the road to a greater life. I hope to see them do the same for students after me.”
