COLLEGE PARK, MD (May 2011) Dr. John T. Guthrie, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Human Development, has been elected to the National Academy of Education (NAEd), the nation’s prestigious honor society for scholars in the field of education.
Dr. Guthrie, an expert on the cognitive and motivational aspects of reading and learning, is one of eleven new education leaders elected to membership in the NAEd for their pioneering efforts in educational research and policy development.
"I am very honored to join such an esteemed group of educational leaders. I credit my time and opportunities at the University of Maryland for this award," says Dr. Guthrie.
According to a press release from NAEd, nominations are submitted by individual members once a year for review and election by the entire membership. "The newly elected members are preeminent leaders in their respective areas of educational research, and they have had extraordinary impact on education in the U.S.," says Dr. Susan Fuhrman, President of the National Academy.
Founded in 1965, the NAEd consists of U.S. members and foreign associates who are elected on the basis of outstanding scholarship related to education. Once elected, members serve on education−related study panels and are deeply engaged in NAEd’s professional development programs focused on the rigorous preparation of the next generation of scholars.
"John’s election to the National Academy is an extraordinary and well-deserved honor for a true leader in educational research. We are thrilled that he is being recognized for his contributions to the field of human development," says Donna Wiseman, dean of the College of Education.
