COLLEGE PARK, MD (June, 2016) Professor Nelly Stromquist of the Higher Education, Student Affairs, and International Education Policy (HESI) program has been named an Honorary Fellow of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) the societys highest honor.
The CIES Honorary Fellows Award was established in 1982 to honor senior members of the society whose lifelong work – as evidenced by scholarship, teaching, research, and technical service – has contributed most significantly to growth in the field of comparative and international education. To date, there have been twenty-seven Honorary Fellows. Dr. Stromquist is the first Latin American and the sixth woman ever to receive the award.
As a scholar, Dr. Stromquist specializes in issues related to social change and gender, which she examines from the perspective of critical sociology. Her research focuses on the dynamics of educational policies and practices, gender relations, and equity, particularly in Latin America.
She is a prolific author. Among the books she has written are Education in a Globalized World: The Connectivity of Economic Power, Technology, and Knowledge (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002); Feminist Organizations and Social Transformation in Latin America (Paradigm, 2007); and Literacy for Citizenship: Gender and Grassroots Dynamics in Brazil (SUNY Press, 1997). She is the editor of The Professoriate in the Age of Globalization (Sense, 2007) and The Construction of Gender in Public Policy: Comparative Perspectives from Latin America (in Spanish, Instituto de Estudios Peruanos, 2006). She is also a co-editor, with Dr. Joel Samoff of Stanford University and fellow HESI professor Dr. Steven Klees, of The World Bank and Education: Critiques and Alternatives (Sense, 2012) and, with Dr. Karen Monkman of DePaul University, of Globalization and Education: Integration and Contestation across Cultures (2nd ed., Rowman & Littlefield Education, 2014).
Dr. Stromquist has been a Fulbright Scholar in Brazil and Peru. In 2005-2006, she was Fulbright New Century Scholar. In 2012, the Swedish Research Council named her to the esteemed Kerstin Hesselgren Visiting Professorship. She is also a former president of CIES.
Dr. Nelly Stromquist is a professor of international education policy in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education. She holds a Ph.D. in International Development Education from Stanford University.
