Dennis Kivlighan Named Editor of Journal of Counseling Psychology

COLLEGE PARK, MD (July, 2016) – Dennis Kivlighan, professor of counseling psychology in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education, was selected to serve as editor of the highly-regarded Journal of Counseling Psychology.

“I am honored to be chosen as the incoming editor for counseling psychology's leading empirical journal,” Dr. Kivlighan said of his selection.

A publication of the American Psychological Association, the journal publishes empirical research on topics ranging from diversity and underrepresented populations in counseling activities to the development of new measures in counseling psychology.

“The selection of Dennis Kivlighan for this prestigious and influential role reflects the longstanding leadership he has provided to the field of counseling psychology as a scholar and thought leader,” said Roger Worthington, chair of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education.

“It is a privilege to carry on an important Maryland legacy,” Dr. Kivlighan said, as he is the third UMD faculty member from the Counseling Psychology program to be appointed the role of editor for this journal.

Dr. Kivlighan will assume the editor role in 2017 from Terence Tracey, who is an alumnus of the UMD Counseling Psychology program. Earlier editors of the journal from UMD’s Counseling Psychology program include Professor Clara E. Hill and Professor Emeritus and Senior Lecturer Charles Gelso. In addition to Terence Tracey, program alumnus Brent Mallinckrodt has also served as editor.

Dr. Kivlighan’s research interests include process and outcome in counseling and psychotherapy groups and the therapy relationship. In 2012, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Counseling Psychology’s Section for the Promotion of Psychotherapy Science, in addition to a Lifetime Mentoring Award from the Society in 2009.

The Counseling Psychology program at the University of Maryland is a collaborative program jointly housed in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education and the Department of Psychology and is consistently one of the highest-ranked programs of its kind.
