In an op-ed piece for Teen Vogue, former secretary of education John B. King Jr. emphasized the importance of civic education and student activism.

“Higher education must take even greater responsibility for educating students to become well-rounded citizens who are prepared to contribute to our society and help solve the most pressing challenges facing our communities and our world,” Dr. King wrote.

Dr. King recently joined the College of Education faculty as a visiting professor. He served as secretary of education in President Obama’s administration from 2016 to 2017 and is currently the president and CEO of The Education Trust, a nonprofit organization that seeks to close the achievement gap.
