The Washington Post: How One Maryland High School Successfully Boosted Minority Student Enrollment in Advanced Classes

University of Maryland College of Education Associate Professor Kellie Rolstad co-authored an article in The Washington Post about Hammond High School, located in Columbia, Maryland, which won the 2017 “Schools of Opportunity Project.”

The Schools of Opportunity Project recognizes public high schools that work to close opportunity gaps. Hammond High School has been successful in raising minority enrollment in advanced classes.

Dr. Rolstad wrote the article along with Kevin Welner, one of the founders of the Schools of Opportunity Project, and Linda Molner Kellet, former assistant dean of teacher education at the University of Colorado. They analyzed the support systems Hammond High used to raise student achievement.

Dr. Rolstad is an associate professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. Her research interests include the language of schooling, language diversity, second language teaching and democratic education.
