The Baltimore Sun: Will the Democratic Left Usher in a New Era of Taxing and Spending?

Professor Steven Klees wrote an Op-Ed in The Baltimore Sun following a conference attended by 200 or so researchers, analysts, strategists and campaigners titled “Taxing the (Very) Rich: Finding A Cure for Excessive Wealth disorder.” In the Op-Ed Professor Klees examined government taxing and spending.

“We need a revolution in government taxing and spending,” wrote Professor Klees.

Klees argued that there are severe injustices in tax policies that require working middle-class Americans to bear the majority of the responsibility. On the spending side, Klees made a case for focusing the spending budget on public services and programs in alignment with President Roosevelt’s New Deal.

“We need a revolution in thinking that recognizes that in today’s world, it is only through the collective and concerted action of local, state and national governments, as well as international organizations, that we will be able to thrive – or even to survive,” Professor Steven Klees.

Professor Steven Klees is Professor of International Education Policy at the University of Maryland.
