Dissertation of the Year Award Named for COE Professor Emerita

COLLEGE PARK, MD (September, 2014) – The American College Personnel Association (ACPA), a preeminent student affairs organization, has named its Dissertation of the Year Award for professor emerita Marylu McEwen of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education.

Dr. McEwen is no stranger to high honors. She has twice received ACPA awards in recognition of her contributions to higher education and student affairs – the Contribution to Knowledge Award in 2005 and the Voice of Inclusion Medallion in 2004. She also earned the University of Maryland Board Of Regents’ Faculty Award for distinguished performance in mentoring.

It is little surprise that the ACPA should name this particular award for such an accomplished scholar as Dr. McEwen. Her work has appeared in leading higher education and student affairs publications, including the Journal of College Student Development, Journal of Counseling Psychology, and New Directions for Student Services, and she has authored numerous books and book chapters in addition to serving as associate editor of the Journal of College Student Development.

In announcing this honor, the ACPA praised Dr. McEwen as "a tireless mentor of young scholars and emerging professionals, engaged in sharpening their thinking and finding their own voices."

The recipient of the first Marylu McEwen Dissertation of the Year Award will be announced this December and recognized at the ACPA Annual Convention, which will take place March 5 - 8, 2015 in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Marylu McEwen is Professor Emerita of Student Affairs in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education. In a career spanning more than 35 years, Dr. McEwen held faculty posts at Maryland and Auburn University, where she also served as Assistant Dean of the Graduate School. Prior to becoming a faculty member, Dr. McEwen served as Assistant Dean of Women at Purdue University and worked in residence life at Indiana University.
