COE Researchers Win Prestigious Awards at ASHE Conference

COLLEGE PARK, MD (November, 2013) – Two faculty members in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education received prestigious awards at this November’s annual conference of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) held in St. Louis.

Dr. Kimberly Griffin was recognized with the Early Career Award, an extremely competitive accolade for a scholar’s important contributions to a field of knowledge. Dr. Griffin researches issues related to underrepresented communities in higher education, diversity and campus racial climate, and the nature and influence of faculty-student relationships and mentoring. Her co-authored article “Marginalizing Merit?: Gender Differences in Black Faculty D/discourses on Tenure, Advancement, and Professional Success” appeared in this summer’s issue of ASHE’s Review of Higher Education.

ASHE’s Council on Ethnic Participation conferred the Dr. Mildred Garcia Junior Faculty Member Research Award on Dr. Julie Park, whose research looks at socioeconomic and racial diversity, the role of religion in social capital networks, and the conditions affecting interracial friendship. This fall’s issue of the COE magazine Endeavors will feature a profile of Dr. Park’s work on types of diversity and of her new book from Rutgers University Press, When Diversity Drops: Race, Religion, and Affirmative Action in Higher Education.

Dr. Kimberly Griffin is an associate professor and Dr. Julie Park is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education.
