The New York Times: Reading Scores on National Exam Decline in Half the States

An article in the New York Times outlining declines in reading scores on national exams features Professor Peter Afflerbach.
The article describes how fourth and eighth graders in the United States are struggling in their ability to read literature and academic texts. Two of three children don’t meet the standards for reading proficiency, according to a national assessment.
Commenting on reading score declines in the eighth grade, Dr. Afflerbach called the findings “troubling” and “precipitous,” according to the article. “The students haven’t developed the reading comprehension to deal with text complexity,” he said.
Dr. Afflerbach is a professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. His research interests include reading comprehension strategies and processes.
