Counseling Psychology

The Counseling Psychology program at the University of Maryland is a joint program between the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services and the Department of Psychology. Our Counseling Psychology Program has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1953. In ratings evaluating Counseling Psychology over the past three decades, the University of Maryland is always among the very top ranked programs in the United States. Our faculty represent a broad range of research interests, including psychotherapy process and outcome research, multicultural psychology, vocational psychology, and interpersonal relationships.

School Counseling

The School Counseling Program at the University of Maryland resides in the number one ranked counseling department (U.S. News and World Report). Graduates of our School Counseling Program are eligible for certification as school counselors in Maryland and other states. The School Counseling Program prepares professional school counselors who will be leaders, advocates, and systemic change agents in K-12 urban educational settings.

School Psychology

The School Psychology Program is an APA-accredited, research-intensive Ph.D. program in professional psychology that embodies the scientist-practitioner model. Program graduates pursue academic/research- and practice-oriented careers. Graduates of the Program are eligible for licensure as professional psychologists in Maryland and other states, and are also eligible for the Nationally Certified School Psychologist credential awarded by NASP. Graduates are automatically eligible for Maryland State Dept. of Education certification as a School Psychologist.

Higher Education

Higher Education is an area of advanced study within the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education. This nationally recognized graduate program in Higher Education (ranked #11, U.S. News and World Report 2014) prepares students for leadership positions in higher education administration, policy analysis, and scholarship.

International Education Policy

The International Education Policy (IEP) program offers M.A. and Ph.D.degrees designed to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of today's educational policy and practice. The focus is on the relation of education to economic, political, and social development in both developing and developed countries at local, national, regional, and global levels. The IEP program gives comprehensive attention to education, considering both formal schooling, from pre-school to higher education, as well as non-formal, adult, and community-based education.

Student Affairs

The Student Affairs program is committed to the professional preparation of administrators and student development educators in higher education environments. The program is modeled and directed by the core values of Student Development, Multiculturalism, Leadership, Scholarship and Research, and Ethical Practices.

Special Education Program

The Special Education Program is designed to prepare highly qualified teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to prepare researchers, teacher educators, and leaders at the doctoral level in the field of special education.

There are two full time undergraduate Special Education teacher preparation programs that lead to a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education:  Elementary/Middle Special Education and Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education. In addition, the Special Education program offers three options to receive teacher certification at the Master’s level. The course of study for all the special education certification programs prepares teachers to assume the increasingly complex and sophisticated responsibilities of a teacher of students with high and low incidence disabilities. Graduates will be eligible for special education teacher certification in the state of Maryland, with certification reciprocity in 49 states. All programs are approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

The EDSP program is ranked #11 in the most recent U.S. News & World Report survey (2015). Students in the EDSP program receive an unparalleled education experience that emphasizes excellence in scholarship and professional practice within a diverse community.
