COE Faculty Awarded Seed Grants

WEB NEWS RELEASE

COLLEGE PARK, MD (February 2011) – One of the most prominent international professional organizations in the field of education will honor Assistant Professor Chauncey Monte-Sano in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Monte-Sano has been named the recipient of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Division K Early Career Award. Division K within AERA focuses on Teachers and Teacher Education.

The Early Career Award, one of the most prestigious awards given by AERA, recognizes a scholar who has conducted a distinguished program of cumulative educational research in any field of educational inquiry within the first decade following receipt of their doctoral degree. The decision to honor Dr. Monte-Sano was based on the quality, impact and potential of work to make a difference for students and teachers from the outset of her career.

Dr. Monte-Sano was selected based on her research on both how adolescents learn to write reasoned historical arguments and ways to facilitate pre-service and in-service program improvements that help history teachers learn to support the development of students’ evidence-based historical writing. As the award selection committee describes, her work, which is situated in high poverty schools, elegantly integrates a focus on student learning, teaching and teacher learning, providing the field with a solid body of evidence of how skillful teaching can provide all students access to both academic literacies and democratic participation.

Founded in 1916, AERA is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and evaluation and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results. Dr. Monte-Sano will be presented the award at AERA’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans this April.
