New High School Partnership with Prince George's County

COLLEGE PARK, MD (September, 2012) –The University of Maryland, the College of Education and Prince George’s County Public Schools held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Northwestern High School Partnership. This partnership was established through a Memorandum of Understanding and seeks to enrich educational opportunities at Northwestern High School while building a sustainable, mutually beneficial relationship.

The University of Maryland has a long history of community outreach with Prince George’s County Public Schools, including Northwestern High School. The University has a rich history of working with Northwestern High School through a number of extended learning and in–class partnerships. In March 2012 the University of Maryland and Prince George’s County Public Schools signed a MOU creating the Northwestern High School Partnership which is now a comprehensive, university–wide partnership with specific goals and objectives.

Driven by the office of the Leadership and Community Service–Learning unit of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union, the Office for Community Engagement with the Vice President of Administrative Affairs and the College of Education, this partnership is developing a community engagement model that harnesses the resources and expertise of the University of Maryland and the communities of the University of Maryland District to establish Northwestern High School along with the elementary and middle school that feed into Northwestern as a premier school within Prince George’s County. Through this work, the partnership is exposing students of Northwestern High School to the opportunities available to make a college education and experience a reality for those who may not believe they can go to college.
