Exploring the Connection Between Early Childhood Education & Financial Literacy

COLLEGE PARK, MD (March, 2013) – Assistant Professor Geetha Ramini of the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology was featured on a financial advising website establishing the connection between early childhood mathematics proficiency and financial literacy in adulthood.

“Proficiency in mathematics at the beginning of kindergarten is strongly predictive of mathematics achievement test scores years later: in elementary school, in middle school, and even in high school. This pattern is consistent with the general finding that initial knowledge is positively related to learning, but the relations in math are unusually strong and persistent,” according to Dr. Ramani.

Because the seeds of mathematics success are sown at a very early age, experts believe that the tenets of sound financial literacy should also be planted early.
