Doctoral Alum Lands GEAR UP Grant for Work in Buffalo Schools

COLLEGE PARK, MD (July, 2015) – Alum Dr. Tony Tosado (Ph.D. Counselor Education ’12), a clinical assistant professor in the Graduate School of Education at SUNY Buffalo, is a co-PI on an interdisciplinary project team which has received a six-year, $1.77 million dollar grant from the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation.

Funded by this collaborative GEAR UP grant, Dr. Tosado and his fellow researchers – Drs. Nate Daun-Barnett, Fenice Boyd, and David Cantaffa – will work with six middle and six high schools in the Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) to increase students' academic achievement, as well as their knowledge and awareness of the process of choosing a college to attend.

Other partners in this project include the national non-profit organization Say Yes to Education, Medaille College in Buffalo, and SUNY Buffalo's Office for University Preparatory Programs.

Dr. Luis Antonio Tosado II is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, School, and Educational Psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. His research interests include the college aspirations, preparation, and attainment of Latino youth and English Language Learners, as well as the leadership role of school counselors, particularly in the context of school reform in urban school districts. His current research focuses on the vocational identity of Spanish-speaking persons. He graduated from the College of Education’s doctoral program in Counselor Education in 2012.
