Dean's Message

Happy summer!  Our College of Education community continues to do important and impactful work, and the accomplishments of our faculty, students and alumni this spring reflect this commitment.

A highlight of the spring semester was our Dean’s Lecture on Education and Society, which featured USM Chancellor Emeritus Brit Kirwan presenting on "Equity and Excellence in Maryland Education." His presentation underscored the work still needed to be done in Maryland, as well as the power of collective action and engaged policymakers to influence educational opportunities.

We also feature Elaine Johnson Coates ’59, a COE alumna who was recently honored by the UMD Alumni Association for her pioneering role as the first African American undergraduate and first African American woman graduate of the University of Maryland.  We are incredibly proud of Ms. Coates and the many alumni from the College who have challenged conventions to create a more inclusive society.

The 2019-20 academic year marks our 100^th year as a College of Education.  We look forward to a year of special events to celebrate our Centennial Anniversary and showcase groundbreaking alumni like Ms. Coates, as well as faculty and students on the vanguard of history in the education field. I hope you will join us for our inaugural event, Terrapin Ed Talks, on October 3^rd, where our faculty experts will share their cutting edge research on the pressing issues in education today.

Throughout the year, we will be highlighting our groundbreaking researchers and transformative educators and we hope to see you on campus during our Centennial Celebration year!
