Become a Teacher at the University of Maryland. Join the EdTerps Community!

The University of Maryland Elementary Education Program prepares you to be an elementary school teacher and yields a Bachelor of Science degree. It is designed for students who enter the university as freshmen or who transfer from another university or community college to College Park before their junior year.  Our courses are taught by world renowned researchers and award-winning professors with extensive experience teaching in elementary schools who are ready to invest in your future as a teacher. You will learn evidence-based practices, adapt instruction for diverse groups of students, boost student learning and anchor your teaching in social justice principles.

Why should you choose this highly ranked program?

Our Elementary Education program is ranked every year among the top 25 programs across the US. You will benefit from small class sizes and wrap-around support from the day you are admitted to the day you graduate. In addition to mastering practices associated with the major content areas, you will develop expertise related to special education and multilingual education. Field experiences in top-ranked Maryland schools, of increasing duration and responsibility, are aligned each semester with your coursework. You will work with children and mentor teachers in five consecutive placements, starting with tutoring experiences and culminating in a full-year internship, when you are paired with an expert mentor teacher and become the lead teacher of the class. In your senior year, we will assist you in finding your first teaching job. Over 95% of our graduates secure their first job before graduation or shortly thereafter.

Upon graduation, you will be ready to apply to the Maryland State Department of Education for Elementary Teacher Certification (grades 1-6). A Maryland Teaching Certificate is accepted by most most other states in the US, as well.
