How can this help my first graders?

First Grade Literacy Lab is a research project managed by the University of Maryland using curriculum developed by the National Institute of Direct Instruction. Using a program called Reading Mastery (RM), this project teaches foundational reading skills like phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Lessons are carefully structured to build these skills step-by-step, with lots of practice and immediate feedback to ensure students truly understand before moving on. This systematic approach is especially beneficial for students at risk of reading disabilities.

What is involved?

Teachers complete surveys, teach supplemental curriculum to half of their students, and contribute to important research. Research staff members assess students and provide professional development. Teachers who join receive the benefits of curriculum, Professional Development, and compensation.
