University of Maryland College of Education alum Leon Smith ’01 was featured on CBS Mornings after being named the 2026 National Teacher of the Year. A social studies teacher at Haverford High School in Pennsylvania, Smith was recognized for his student-centered approach to teaching, leadership, and commitment to helping young people thrive.
During the interview, Smith reflected on the recognition, saying, “It’s just such an honor to be able to represent teachers all over the country.” He also spoke about the lasting influence educators have beyond academics, noting that students remember “how you make them feel.”
