In an interview with InvestigateTV, Professor Geetha Ramani discusses how parents’ attitudes toward math can influence children’s experiences. Her research has found that negative messages about math can trigger feelings of anxiety in children as young as four.
“Just like reading, math needs practice. It needs encouragement. It needs support. It can be hard. We completely understand that,” says Ramani. “And that’s why we feel having families engage in math at a very young age can be important, even if the parents themselves don’t feel confident doing it.”
The news story also explores ways families can build confidence and support children’s mathematical learning through positive, open-ended conversations about math.
