Undergraduate Admissions Overview

The teacher certification programs for elementary and secondary education are professional education programs. Our programs provide the appropriate content knowledge, teaching methods, and practicum experiences to qualify for teacher certification in the State of Maryland. All students regardless of entry status are required to meet certain academic and experiential benchmarks prior to enrolling in teaching methods courses and the yearlong internship. To monitor the successful completion of these benchmarks, all students are required to apply to the College of Education in order to enroll in the upper-level courses required for teacher certification.

Prior to submitting an application, students must complete the following academic and experiential benchmarks:

Elementary Education
  • A minimum of 45 credits earned (with at least 15 credits earned at the University of Maryland)
  • A 2.75 cumulative GPA (3.0 GPA recommended)
  • CORE Fundamental English (FE) and Fundamental Math (FM) requirements satisfied
  • EDCI280, Introduction to Teaching, with a grade of "B" or better
  • The following courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better:

    MATH212, Elements of Math (3 credits)
    MATH213, Elements of Geometry
    (3 credits)
    CORE Biological Science laboratory
    (4 credits)
    CORE Physical Science laboratory (4 credits)

  • Minimum passing scores on all three sections of the PRAXIS I exam
    (Reading - 177, Writing - 173, Math - 177)
Secondary Education
  • A minimum of 45 credits earned (with at least 15 credits earned at the University of Maryland)
  • A 2.75 cumulative GPA (3.0 GPA recommended)
  • CORE Fundamental English (FE) and Fundamental Math (FM) requirements satisfied
  • Minimum passing scores on all three sections of the PRAXIS I exam
    (Reading - 177, Writing - 173, Math - 177)

After meeting the requirements above, students should submit the "Application for Admission to Teacher Education" and all required supplemental information. Application materials are available in the College of Education Office of Student Services, located in 1204 Benjamin. It is recommended that students apply to the professional program during the Spring semester of their sophomore year.

NOTE: Students will not be permitted to enroll in professional support courses without being fully admitted to the professional program. Students will not be permitted to enter the yearlong internship (blocked methods and student teaching) until all of the professional support courses have been completed (EDCI461 and EDCI397)
