Yearlong Teacher Residency

Maryland PDS 2025 Project Yearlong Teacher Residency (YTR)

The Maryland PDS 2025 Project will review exemplars of teacher internships and residencies for the purposes of designing and piloting a Yearlong Teacher Residency. The project also explores the viability of a paid residency option for the Yearlong Teacher Residency. The paid residency option may provide an opportunity for local career changers to enter teaching while receiving financial support during their career transition. The paid residency option builds on the currently structured part-time paid internship model currently offered in a few MCPS schools. Features of the part-time paid internship model include:

• Part-time paid interns hold bachelor’s degrees and enter the part- time paid internship on a provisional, conditional, or resident teacher certificate.
• Part-time paid interns take on a reduced teaching load (.4, .5, or .6 of a first-year teacher) and are therefore teachers of record in the school.
• The part-time paid internship is a full K-12 school year.

The current part-time paid internship model will serve as a starting point for development of the paid residency option of the Yearlong Teacher Residency.
