Graduate Student Organization

Dear College of Education Students and Faculty,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 academic year! As this year’s executive board of the Graduate Student Organization (GSO), we are so excited to begin a new term with you!

As a tight-knit campus community, we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic that seems far from over, manage its social and economic impacts, and grapple with the long-standing causes and consequences of racism. These are issues that remain relevant to our global UMD community, and how they will surface and intersect this academic year is largely unclear. More than ever, we feel the need for students, faculty, and staff to feel connected and united in pursuits to make the world a better place.

Starting by making our direct surroundings better, your GSO team is working hard to do its part in realizing opportunities to advocate for and advance antiracist practices and policies in the COE, promoting meaningful connections with peers and colleagues and even transcending the walls of the traditional classroom or offices, and renewing progress in our academic undertakings and lines of research. For AY 2022-2023, we have three overarching goals: 1) being highly intentional about fostering an inclusive community now that we are returning to mostly in-person activities; 2) invest in developing relationships with leadership, both well-established and incoming; and 3) participate in community service as the College of Education to give back but also learn from and with members from the larger community around UMD. To realize these goals, we hope to organize several events and gatherings to highlight the exciting academic endeavors and achievements of all graduate students, but also to wind down and foster human connections.

Our first event of the year, our Annual Welcome Fair, was a huge success and we enjoyed meeting new and returning students and getting to know everyone a little better over ice cream. We hope you will continue to join us at our next event, Yoga with the Dean, in early October! Check out our event page for more information and resources.

Throughout the year, please connect with us to let us know how we can best meet the needs of COE graduate students. We are here to support you!:

Sincerely,
