Course will utilize experiential learning opportunities to develop and apply the knowledge and skills of leadership into specific contexts of leadership practice.
All students enrolled in the course must work with one of the three America Reads*America Counts programs and must receive permission to enroll by contacting Alison Barlow at abarlow@umd.edu. This course will explore public education policy in the United States, including historical context, No Child Left Behind legislation, the achievement gap, school funding, standardized testing, and alternatives to the current public education system. It will also explore the meaning of leadership in an
educational context and advocacy for change within this context.

HESI 321 Advanced Social Action Seminar (1 Credit)
Prerequisite: HESI217 and EDCP320. Restriction: Limited to Minor in Leadership Studies students only.
The use of leadership theories to inform the practice of addressing social issues in society, on campus, or within the surrounding community. Students will: identify a current and compelling social issue; explore the historical, social, and political aspects of social issues; identify and select applicable leadership theories to confront the social issue; create and develop a plan that integrates leadership theories and the social issue; and implement and evaluate the overall social action project. Focuses on executing, implementing, and assessing a social action project in small groups and teams. Designed for students who plan to complete the Leadership Studies Minor Certificate and is a hybrid course which is primarily online with periodical face to face interactions. Meets Tuesdays, 2:00-4:45pm in the Margaret Brent Room in Stamp. Designed for juniors and seniors who have actively participated in community service-learning, leadership, and civic engagement. Class members will have the opportunity to reflect deeply on their experiences, to study and practice modes of civic action, and to develop their future plans as civically engaged citizens, scholars, and leaders. HESI 418M Special Topics in Leadership; Applications of Identity on Leadership for Social Change (3 Credit)
The special topics and leadership course will address a single topic related to leadership through the semester. In-depth study and analysis on the topic will be the basis for the course. Students will examine how aspects of identity impact leadership for social change. The class explores strategies for creating positive change while considering the complex dynamics of addressing systems of power, privilege, and oppression. A learning lab component is included in which students will participate in various projects and experiences including attending the Mosaic Diversity and Leadership Retreat or comparable experience.

The purpose of this course is to introduce the concept and practice of leadership through service-learning in a complex, global context. UMD students will work on virtual teams with students at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and develop a collaborative service- learning project for a community in Kigali, Rwanda. The service-learning component of this course will expose students to the needs of appropriate, sustainable technology in under-resourced communities and the role of addressing social issues through global partnerships. UMD and Polytechnic students will travel abroad to complete the service-learning experience in Rwanda from May 19 - June 2
