Inside Higher Ed: Do the Work

Jia Zheng and Jalah Townsend

COE grad students Jia Zheng and Jalah Townsend describe strategies for retaining Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) women faculty at higher education institutions in a recent Inside Higher Ed article. Some of the actions the authors suggest include conducting equity audits, making public goals and benchmarks, and recognizing the contributions of BIPOC women faculty within departments and the institution.

“The fact is that, for too long, BIPOC women faculty have experienced copious amounts of discrimination that have negatively impacted their experiences within academe,” the authors write. “Implementing these changes is the first step, if not a pivotal one, toward transforming institutions, structures and systems.”

Jia Zheng is a doctoral student and Jalah Townsend is a master's student, both in the higher education, student affairs and international education policy program.
