As several states across the country seek to restrict colleges’ DEI efforts, some universities are aiming to build a culture of shared equity leadership. Professor Roger Worthington underscores the role of a cabinet-level diversity officer in helping establish and implement institutional efforts to advance diversity and inclusion. 

“In the absence of that, the highly decentralized organizational infrastructure then becomes potentially problematic by siloing specific activities without any collaborative partnerships or coordinated efforts to address the more-centralized priorities of the institution,” he explains. He adds that a lack of coordination through a central office could result in fragmented processes and duplicate roles.
