Asian Men’s Mental Health: Healing Through Community and Connection

For many Asian men, cultural expectations, the model minority myth and traditional ideas about masculinity can make it difficult to acknowledge mental health challenges or seek support. A new article from Cold Tea Collective explores these experiences with therapists, educators, coaches and community leaders working to expand conversations about Asian men’s mental health. William Ming Liu, professor and chair of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education, highlights how misconceptions can obscure these challenges.

“My sense is that the general public believes that Asian American men are free from many mental health issues largely because of the model minority myth,” he said. However, that perception can make it harder for Asian men to acknowledge their struggles and easier for others to overlook them.
