Join the College of Education’s Communion Research Lab for their latest art exhibit and conversation exploring the experiences of Black men in higher education and the revolutionary possibilities of love, relationality and healing through scholarship, storytelling, visual arts and community engagement.
This event brings together scholars, practitioners, students and community members for reflection, dialogue and connection, fostering meaningful discussions around belonging, vulnerability, healing and community.

Explore The Endarkened Photovoice Project, presented by Associate Professor Christopher Travers (University of Maryland College of Education), Associate Professor J.T. Snipes (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville), Chief of Staff Derrick Tillman-Kelly (College of Engineering, The Ohio State University) and Ph.D. Candidate Na’eem Allen-Stills (University of Maryland College of Education). The exhibit features visual storytelling that centers the experiences, identities and perspectives of Black men in higher education.
Panel Discussion and Q&A | 2-3:30 p.m
Moderated by Reverend Dr. Jamie Washington, Communion for Black Men members will share reflections and personal experiences in a panel discussion, followed by a Q&A with attendees. Featuring Travers, Snipes, Tillman-Kelly, and Allen-Stills, as well as Associate Professor Wilson K. Okello (College of Education, PennState University) and Edwin Lee.
About Reverend Dr. Jamie Washington
Reverend Washington (he/him/his) is the president and founder of the Washington Consulting Group, where he draws on more than 42 years of experience as an educator, administrator and consultant. His company was named by The Economist as one of the Top 10 Global Diversity Consultants in the world.
Reverend Washington is also a faculty member in the La Mesa Academy for Theological Studies program at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, and the pastor of Unity Fellowship Church of Baltimore.
Throughout his career, he has served as an invited instructor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Lancaster Theological Seminary. He is president emeritus and co-founder of the Social Justice Training Institute and a past president of the American College Personnel Association.
Reverend Washington earned a Ph.D. in college student development from the University of Maryland College Park, a M.S. degree from Indiana University Bloomington, a M.Div. in Christian ethics and pastoral care from Howard University School of Divinity, and a B.S. degree from Slippery Rock State College.
