The Maryland Initiative for Literacy and Equity (MILE), led by COE Associate Professor DJ Bolger, is among the finalists for UMD’s Institutional Grand Challenges grants. On October 28th from 9 am-noon, we will be hosting a Literacy and Equity Forum as a part of a wider Language Science Day celebration. The Forum will bring together interdisciplinary collaborators and stakeholders from across the university to discuss this initiative and the opportunities it creates. Featured presenters at the forum will include Brit Kirwan, former UMD president and chair of the Kirwan Commission that is shaping the future of Maryland’s schools. Additional presentations and panels will include cross-disciplinary faculty from the COE, as well as additional faculty from the College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, College of Arts and Humanities, School of Public Policy, College of Information Studies, and Morgan State University. All faculty, staff, and graduate & undergraduate students are invited to attend. Attendance is free, and lunch is included. Please register here as soon as possible to help with our planning and reserve your spot! The event will be held at the Language Science Center (2114 HJ Patterson Hall).
Additionally, all forum attendees are invited to stay for the whole day of language science events! After lunch will be the following:- Breakout sessions: Parallel breakout sessions will be organized around cross-cutting themes, anchored by lightning talks. Themes include Language science in the public good, The next generation of clinical tools, Language in the classroom, and Virtual research and engagement - what we're keeping from the pandemic. We still need more lightning talks (just 3 minutes); please email shevaun@umd.edu if you have a project relevant to one of those themes!
- Poster sessions: The poster sessions are a fun opportunity to share your research with people in other departments, who you may not normally talk to. We encourage you to team up with your labmates or collaborators to explain your big picture questions in a way that will be comprehensible and interesting to a broad audience. Please email shevaun@umd.edu if you'd like to present a poster.
- After poster sessions, the day will conclude with a fun event TBD!
